All in all, a stay that started out disappointing was not horrible, but certainly not what we had hoped for.Robbie’s of Islamorada, 77522 Overseas Hwy., is a longtime, only-in-Florida attraction tucked under a bridge in the Middle Keys. The fridge was awesome, and was even filled with ice upon our arrival! Bravo! The front desk staff and the valet staff were top-notch, and took very good care of us, our belongings, and our vehicle. The ceiling fan was also a welcome addition to the room. The in-room safe was excellent, but I think the batteries are about shot. Would it kill you to wipe one down once in a while? And the door frame? The bed was comfortable and warm, unfortunately, it looks like someone had spilled bleach on our carpet at some time and there were white blotches all over the bedroom carpet. Why don't you? The back of bathroom doors are the single most overlooked place in any hotel room. Note to housekeeping: I'd be willing to bet that every guest who comes to your resort looks at the back of the bathroom door multiple times. I did find the lack of any grab bars in the bathrooms a concern, as it seems most resorts and hotels now have them in all rooms, not just the ADA-rated rooms. The hand showers were very good for washing off questionable pool water. Water pressure is what you would expect in Key West, but insufficient for the provided rain showers, but it did get plenty HOT. The two bathrooms in our suite were far beyond what we were expecting, and really unnecessary, but certainly welcomed.
There was some concern about the air conditioner in the bedroom as it did not come on when turning down the thermostat, but a quick reset of the plug in the outlet reset the unit and it worked flawlessly all weekend, keeping the room a chilly 68. On a positive note: Our room was amazing, and the view was spectacular - overlooking Mallory Square and the Key West Aquarium. Even the hot tub was questionable and was filled with sand on the bottom. The remaining guests who wanted to, swam in a pool that was smelly, cloudy, and murky and the bottom was covered with sand. Did I mention it was 90 degrees outside? Sunday started much better, as it seemed that the animals had to check out by 11:00. So the pool was unusable to us Friday night and all-day Saturday. I fully support their right to have fun, but what about our right to relax in peace and quiet? We spoke to several other guests who felt the same way, and who had complained to the front desk, but nothing was done. As an asthmatic, that made the pool, a posted no smoking area, unusable to me and we had to go elsewhere. But the pool and patio area was filled with loud music playing, obnoxious cigar-smoking animals. We booked a jet ski tour Saturday morning, and when we got back a swim in the pool sounded really nice. Had I known this was going to happen, I absolutely would have booked a different resort. What we got was a Friday night and Saturday of loud obnoxious music, rude people, and motorcycles everywhere, followed by a somewhat relaxing Sunday. My fiancée and I were looking for a relaxing end of summer weekend in Key West. This is the old Margarittaville hotel, what would Jimmy Buffet say?… They have a restaurant attached that does a pretty good job and you can sit outside looking at the ocean. One of the ladders was broken, the pool itself needs a complete resurfacing and one day the filter wasn't runny so you couldn't see the bottom. The pool is small for this large of a hotel and surrounded on all sides by the buildings. One day we didn't get room service until after 4 calls and someone came at 4:30.
The rooms are large but again old, and cleanliness level is a C+.
You stroll to your room down halls painted in a mustard yellow and you don't get in to the keys mood. You are greeted by that Florida mildewy smell in the lobby and then when you walk to your room in the next building, one of the two elevators is under repair and the lobby here hasn't been remodeled. The Opal Key is in a GREAT location, easy walk to anything in Old Town.
